Madagascar, the fourth largest island in the world, is located on the east coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean. With a total area of 587,041 km², it is almost as large as France. Due to its red laterite soils, which can be up to 20 meters thick, Madagascar is also called the "Red Island." The "6th continent" is inhabited by approximately 24.9 million people belonging to eighteen different ethnic groups. The Malagasy communicate with each other in their national language, "Malagasy," or in the official language, French. During a tour of Madagascar, vacationers discover a multifaceted tropical natural paradise. The "Red Island" is not all red, far from it.
